Distinguished statesman and scholar, Carl Bert Albert has, during a career spanning more than forty years, served as a model of excellence in public service through his judgment, skill, dedication, and patriotism. An outstanding student at the University of Oklahoma he was also a Rhodes Scholar from 1931 to 1934 at St. Peter's College, Oxford University. With continuing interest in education, he served on the Board of Trustees of Southern Methodist University from 1968 to 1976. Elected to Congress from the Southeastern Congressional District of Oklahoma, he served continuously for thirty years in the House of Representatives until voluntary retirement in 1977. As Speaker of the House of Representatives from 1971 to 1977, he was a major force in reestablishing the co-equal position of Congress with the Executive Branch and provided leadership for reforming the committee system in Congress and for maintaining a bipartisan foreign policy. In recognition of his many contributions as a distinguished public servant, Southern Methodist University is proud to confer upon Carl Bert Albert the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa.
